Stoke Gabriel (19pts) bt Ottery St Mary (6) by 5 wkts
REPORT - Nick Sandbrook
Stoke's all conquering 2nd XI
cruised to the summit of the C Division with a convincing
victory at Ottery St Mary.
With the side brimming with
youthful confidence, seasoned experience and aged embrocation,
skipper Adam Newman inserted the host on a track showing
more furrows than Mr Burnell's forehead, and soon after I was
creaking down the hill and spraying the ball about like Alex
Hill on camera, followed by fellow "senior" Jamie "Bubba" Day,
as the veteran's took charge of the top end, rather than the
wickets.
Thankfully, Newman's nippers did
the bulk of the work up the hill - Jack Tolley was the star show
with a five-for, impressing with his pace and accuracy, aided by
contributions from Calvin Gay and Angus Lee, as the home side
crumbled after a rapid start to 186-9, with youngster Andy Dean
top scoring on 52. Had octogenarian Clive Burnell (87) hung
onto a regulation slip chance early in Dean's innings, their
total would of been far less, but it's fortunate considering how
fatal it could be to a man of his age, that he couldn't catch a
cold.
The early stages of our reply are a
mystery to me, having been ensconced in the pavilion repairing a
damaged phone and demolishing a tower of Pringles, but I
understand Dave Higgin's nightmare game continued with the ball,
as it had in the field, run out for nothing. Dr Doug took the
fight to OSM in an innings equal parts rapier and scalpal in
firing a decisive 86* to record his highest SGCC score, with
chip ins from the skipper, Matt Taylor and Jamie Day as the game
was wrapped up inside 30 overs.
