Stoke Gabriel’s first eleven have got their season off to a good start with a winning draw over Thoverton in a weather affected match that saw the game restricted to 29 over’s per side.

 

Captain Neil Robinson lost the toss and Thorverton sent Stoke into bat. The Thorverton captain would of been regretting the decision after Opening batsmen  Steve Tolley and Mark Newman got stoke off to a great start the score at 75 before Newman was caught behind off the bowling of left arm bowler Mereridith for 35. 

 

Steve Tolley batted well for he’s 26 before he lost he’s wicket hitting a long hop straight to square leg off the bowling of Fury. This sparked a mini collapse in the stoke batting line up losing 5/15 with the score going from 0/75 to 5/90.

 

Meredith was the chief destroyer for Thorverton he’s left arm bowling proving difficult to put away for the stoke batsmen claiming 5/36. Dave Bolland then strode to the crease and under immense pressure struck a very important 26. Bolland lost he’s wicket trying to clear the boundary, this left the score at 8/137 with Bill Alcock and Matt Smyth in at the crease.

 

The pair put on 44 very important runs Smyth striking 19 and Alcock 22 both not out to take stoke to 8/171 from their allocated 29 over’s. Thoverton’s run chase didn’t start to well loosing 2 early wickets and a third with the score at 3/24.

 

A 92 run fourth wicket partnership between Denfold and Fielder brought Thoverton back in the game. If it wasn’t for a few dropped catches stoke may have got a different result but it wasn’t to be the case the run rate required always climbing thanks to a few tight over’s and stoke managing to claim wickets at crucial stages when Thorverton needed quick runs. Thorverton managed to reach 6/153 from their 29 overs.

 

Newcomers to Stoke this season Ben Robinson and Mitchell Goodwin both claimed 2 wickets for stoke, with Matt Smyth and Dave Bolland claiming 1 each.
