Stoke Gabriel beat Ivybridge (Winning Draw)
Report
Stoke Gabriel continued
their impressive start to the season in collecting the lion's share of the
points through a winning draw at home to Promotion favourites Ivybridge CC
on Saturday, in front of a vocal crowd at the J E Eastley Memorial Field..
Neil Robinson's side will be disappointed they didn't impose themselves
further after excelling with the bat before tea, but the veteran skipper
will be delighted his side showed steal, in avoiding a home defeat.
Ivyrbridge's
stand-in skipper Kelvin Trent inserted Stoke on a John Webber inspired
track, and aided and abetted by a lightening outfield, Stoke started
brightly, with run-machine Steve Tolley particularly punishing of anything
loose until he uncharacteristically drove to Andrews at point, off the
Australian Mike Anderson. His partner, home deubtant, the
swashbuckling Jamie "Doris" Day, an ambitious opening gambit by Shearings,
was an early faller, bowled by Paul Veale after a selection of swipes more
suitable for a driving range.
Alex "Thongs" Hill,
buoyed by his impressive early season form, showed signs of his growing
class as Stoke comfortably raced to 40-2 after 10 overs.
Money Shot fell soon after, again to Anderson, but with Robert Baker
showing Boycott-esque patience at the other end, Stoke's never-ending
batting line up seemed sure to cash in. And so it proved.
Billy "The Fish" Alcock, another home
debutant, maintained the run-rate until his demise at the hands of Veale
for a well crafted 26, to allow for entrance of Shearings. The imperious
skipper strode to the crease like Napoleon entering battle, the distant
sound of a Puccini Opera drifting across the warm air, coupled with the sweet
aroma of a Daiquiri Floridita. Along, with Bakes (65), in scintillating
form to reach a deserved half century, the pair pushed the score along
emphatically to 190-5, before they both succumbed to the returning
Anderson (4-35) from the John Webber Stand End. Scrappy contributions
from Adam Newman and Nick "Boom Snap" Sandbrook followed either side of
a stylish Dave Bolland cameo, as Stoke closed on an impressive 230-8.
In reply, the visitors
showed early intent, until Matt Corstophin bowled Andrews for 14 to bag
his first SDL wicket, soon followed by Greenhouse, also bowled by Sandy to
leave them reeling at 24-2. However, belligerent Australian import Neil
Dunn, 80 runs to the good in the season's opener at Kilmington, rode his
luck with pitch n putt shot selection to keep up with the required run
rate, and although Del Solomon, with a gritty 13 (645 balls, 10 days) did
his best to hamper the away side's chances of chasing the imposing Stoke
total, Ivybridge were well set at 98-2 at drinks.
Robbo, seemingly subject of a bidding war
by Persil and Bold for his kit sponsorship, and fuelled by a goblet of
Courvoisier , rallied his troops and they came out fighting. Solomon
finally succumbed to rigormortis - caught sensationally by Junior Luggy at
midwicket, with an outrageous tumbling leap off Dave Bolland, and when
Kelvin Trent was caught by Alex Hill at square leg off the impressive
Jamie Day, it seemed Stoke were on course for a stunning win. However,
Dunn (103*) was joined on the dancefloor by Andy Coker (27*), and together
the pair teased the total Northwards, despite the best efforts of Stoke's
four prong seam attack, to close, rather meekly on 191-4. Last week's
hero, the left arm veteran Sean Dwyer (44) was controversially overlooked
by the skipper, when perhaps his experience would of been a useful weapon.
A comfortable winning
draw from Stoke, to leave them top of the table after the first two rounds
of games, and again demonstrating their dominance on their home ground.
Next week, Robbo's Army march West to Kingsbridge, the scene of last
season's capitulation that ultimately led to another season of C Division
cricket. Many of the club's followers believe the new side, assembled by
the smoking jacket donning warhorse, is more than capable of destroying
any side in the league this term.
Pimms Moment
: Junior Luggy's
catch at mid-wicket - gymnastic heaven.
