The Sunday XI were unable to defend the small 110 target away at Raleigh , and slumped to their first defeat of the season. They welcomed Ashley Hill for his debut appearance of the season – replacing Tom Armstrong and Bob Bamber replaced Adam Deakin from the listed line – up. Rob Baker won the toss and elected to bat first at one of the homes of Devon County Cricket.
Jannie Pieterse became Stoke’s first casualty after just three balls , failing to trouble the scorers. Mark Newman joined opener Ben Stone , and Newman was removed in his second ball , only spared by Pete Tarr’s no-ball call. The pair began building before Stone had his middle stump knocked back for 9 , and Newman followed back soon after for the same score. Captain Rob Baker was joined by Ashley Hill and they made smart work of pushing the score forwards before Baker (12) tamely chipped a ball to mid wicket. Alex (19) joined father Ashley (25) and together they put on the major partnership of the innings adding 40 runs. Both followed in quick sucession , and the lower order failing to propel the score much further past the century mark , only a returning Adam Castle (7*) making any runs from the lower order. Stoke ending with a fragile , but all the same defendable , 110 all out , 3 overs short of the allotted 40.
After the break Mark Jackson and Sean Dwyer opened up Stoke’s attack. And early inroads we’re aplenty. With the pair both claiming two wickets a piece. Unfortunatly Buzza (39) and Loman (25) were able to steady Raleigh’s rocking ship , and together put on a match winning partnership. Things weren’t helped when Bob Bamber shelled what could have been a potentially match turning catch. Not even a late rally of wickets from Adam Castle and Sean Dwyer could prevent the defeat
