Stoke Sunday XI beat Marldon by 2 wickets
Report
Here is a quiz question – which is the nearest cricket ground
to Stoke Gabriel CC ? The answer is Marldon who
were our opponents on Sunday. The Stoke team was packed with 8 Stoke Gabriel
colts, an Australian and 2 players with extensive cricketing know how.
Captain Steve Tolley invited Marldon
to bat first on a very hot day. The Marldon innings started very
slowly with opening bowlers Stephen Nand-Lal and Rhys Lowther
restricting Marldon to just 23 from the first 10
overs. It was at about this point that a number of the players from the
match, that was due to be played at Plympton,
arrived. This included Pete Bamber who kindly stepped in to help out with the
umpiring. Thanks also to Clive for helping with the umpiring despite his
injury. The other players from the Plympton match
disappeared for a healthy tea provided by Colonel Sanders ! Medium pacer Graham Litt and spinner
Chris Murphy came into the attack and Chris soon had the wicket of Sharles for 12. He followed this shortly afterwards by
taking the wicket of Perry and Marldon slipped to
46 for 2. Chris continued to bamboozle the Marldon
players with his mix of offies and leggies. He would have had 3 wickets but for Nand-Lal
senior dropping a chance on the boundary (sorry Chris). C Butcher and Mark Gilmour put on 65 for the 3rd
wicket to get Marldon up to 111. U13 colt, Angus
Lee, then dismissed Paignton player Gilmour for 39 after a sharp piece of
stumping by new wicket keeper Mark Jackson. This was the third stumping to
Mark who showed Gilchrist type reflexes. C Butcher went on to make 55 before he fell victim to the
bowling of another U13 colt, Jack Tolley. Jack took
a second wicket later to finish with creditable figures of 2 for 11. Angus
continued to bowl tidily and he picked up 4 wickets for just 27 runs. From
being 145 for 3 in the 29th over Marldon
slipped to 167 all out with Stephen and Rhys each helping themselves to a
wicket. The Stoke innings began with a father and son partnership and
was won at the end by a father and son partnership. Our innings began with
Tim and Matt Nand-Lal opening. The pair saw off the initial Marldon bowling attack until Matt fell victim to a good
catch. Elliot Anderton joined Tim and they added 42
for the 2nd wicket. Elliot was eventually bowled by Mark Gilmour
who helped Paignton bowl out our U17s earlier in
the season. Angus Lee rounded off a good all round display by putting on 21
for the 3rd wicket before he also fell to the bowling of Gilmour.
Next in was Jack Tolley who showed a lot of
determination to help Tim see off the threat of Gilmour. Tim fell for 76 with
the score on 116 for 4 and 4 quick wickets saw Stoke dip to 141 for 8. All
was not lost though as hiding in the changing rooms was our secret weapon –
aka number 10 batsman Steve Tolley, who went out to
join his son at the crease. Steve’s first ball nearly led to him being run
out after a call from Jack ! However Steve escaped and the pair dug in. The
27 runs needed for victory were knocked off with clinical precision and Stoke
sneaked home to a 2 wicket victory. This game was played with the Corinthian spirit of old and it
was great to see the up and coming players do so well. Thanks John for
organising the match. Scorecard
