Shaldon Win by 30 Runs

Report

Jacko aptly described the ground as “The side of Mount Everest” , and it was Shaldon that was the venue for the Sunday teams third successive defeat. With Jim Fulner blasting his way to 118 of Shaldon’s 236 , and despite yet another ton from Sunday specialist Mark Newman , the total proved too much for a hashed together Sunday side , who ended 30 runs behind the Shaldon total.

Malcolm Coleman returned to the Stoke fold after two months in the wilderness on an oil rig. The selection also gave starts to Doug Ansley and Alex Bertram , and Shaldon were to bat first under cloudy skies.

Captain Red Rob opted to open up with contrasting pace , with Aussie Jacko coming in from the top end , Bob Bamber shared the new ball. The Shaldon openers found Jacko’s pace difficult to hit (Always helps if you bowl straight Jacko) , and took upon the ever-so-slightly more sedate Bamber to try and open up the floodgates. But , as ever , the flight and gile was difficult to get away with neigh-on all of the runs going through the air , with chances either falling short , going through , or going over fielders , Bamber’s first three overs of bowling had spawned no wickets , but a plethora of chances. But the pressure finally gave, with his previous delivery deservedly despatched for four , Bamber moved one in off the hill , and clipped the off stump , sending Bullmann on his way.

Abraham didn’t last much longer either , with his whiplash style approach quickly bringing runs , before he swept one straight to keeper Duke , who despite his best attempts to drop the ball , finally clung on at about the 3rd time of asking. The luck ended there for Bamber , as Fullner , fresh off the back of an unbeaten 182 against Belstone 2 weeks previous , layed into Bamber’s bowling , taking 29 off the last 5 balls off his spell , ruining otherwise respectable figures. With Jacko also out of the attack , going for an economical 6 off his 7 overs , Rob Baker was turning to the bowlers left in the team.

Neither Ben Stone nor Tom Marke could do anything to stem the flow of runs, Marke imparticular serving up some early tea for Fullner , when willing despatched them to the boundary. Rob Baker swiftly removed both from the attack , and turned to Duke (Replaced by Jacko with the gloves) and himself to try and reign the game back in. And it was the skipper , who finally broke the 147 run partnership between Fullner and Andy Espley when Fullner lashed the ball high to long off to Malcolm Coleman , who took the catch. Soon after Doug Ansley , now into the attack , bowled Espley for a well earned 44 , it was left to the Shaldon lower order to push the total on. The lower order runs were slow to come by , with the skipper and Dougie steming any lower order runs , keeping the total to 236.

Malcolm Coleman opened the 2nd Innings with Ben Stone. And with the 17’s in action against Shaldon in the week with what looks to be a restricted batting line up. Unfortunatly , both Stone and Alex Bertram fell for 1 , and Stoke were 3/2. Enter resident Sunday specialist Mark Newman. Averaging , lots on a Sunday this season , and today were to be no differen’t ,with him and Coleman facing a tough task of steming the flow of wickets whilst keeping within the same hemisphere of the rate.

The pair made drinks without much trouble , but with the score at just 69 , the 170 odd runs needed were going to be difficult to make. Coleman was swiftly bowled , and South African hitter Jannie Pieterse was bought to the crease. He didn’t have tea earlier on , instead he feasted on two great big sides of wild boare , and a pint glass full of raw eggs. Fired up , Jannie gently pushed his first ball straight back to the bowler – first time for everything eh? He let loose soon after , lamping three sixes to a season top score of thirty , before Ben Stone gave him the kiss of death – “He’s doing really well today” , and he was quickly bowled.

Monkey batted around the lower order , and bought his ton up soon before the end , Stoke ending on 206 , thirty runs short.
