Report

The Stoke Gabriel Sunday XI opened up their push for a third successive promotion after hammering Shaldon by 181 runs. After a 163 run partnership between captain Rob Baker and Mark Newman – followed by a fifer from Austrailian seamer Mark Jackson , Stoke finished off for a comfortable victory.

Rob Baker successfully called the coin , and opted to bat first on a damp surface following yesterdays downpours which eliminated most cricket on the Devon circuit. It wasn’t long before the home side lost their first wicket , Jannie Pieterse failing to show the fireworks that he’s become renound for , falling for 2 in the second over. Opener Mark Newman was joined by Rob Baker , and the pair batted together for 28 overs , both looking in fine touch. Stoke passed 100 on over 20 , with both incumbents looking secure at the crease – each passing 50 within quick succession. Homing in on a big score , something was eventually going to give , and it was the skipper in over 30 . Attempting to cream Moore through cow corner , only to be caught on the boundary at the second attempt by Espley. Baker ended on 70 (7 Fours , 2 Sixes) , ending a superb partnership worth 163 towards the total. It wasn’t long before the other half of the partnership was on his way back to the pavilion for 86 (9 Fours , 2 Sixes). Stoke we’re then left on 173/3 , now looking to push the score on. Alex Hill and Adam Newman set about the task , Hill failing to impact much , one boundary before glancing  a ball straight to short mid wicket off Luscombe. Newman made one maximum before also falling foul to Luscombe. And it was left to Tom Armstrong (24*) and Mark Jackson (18*) to push the total up to 244/5 off 40 overs.

After the break , and it didn’t take long for the wickets to start flowing. After just 2 overs Shaldon we’re 1/4. Mark Jackson and Sean Dwyer both claiming 2 scalps each , Dwyer’s second after a very good catch from Under 17’s captain Adam Deakin. Jackson then bowled Espley , leaving Shaldon at 10 for 5 , and after missing an outside edge by a whisker on a hat-trick ball , Jackson finished his spell with 5/11 , and Shaldon on 28/7. Baker turned to the sides young seamers to finish the game off , and after a brief retailiation from Fulner  (30*) and Dowsing (16) , Stoke claimed a victory thanks to 2 wickets from Andy Coles and 1 from Ed Gillin and get a 14-0 (Points) whitewash to open up the season.
