Report
The start of the Whitchurch Wayfarers cricket week started on a
high with the 2nd XI winning their first league game of the season
against Stoke Gabriel. Stoke Gabriel 2nd XI turned up at Whitchurch with
only 10 players after a number of late drop outs from the selected 1st
XI and 2nd XI sides. Fortunately we were able to locate Matt
Nand-Lal who was in Tavistock town centre. Thanks to Matt, his Grandad for
finding him in the town and borrowed kit Stoke managed to field a full side. Stoke won the toss and not surprisingly put Whitchurch into bat
on a green and soft track. Matt Corstorphin (2-48) soon had the first wicket
with the score on just 3. Sam Hill (2-52) then took the wicket of A Sivyer to
see Whitchurch dip to 37 for 2. Whitchurch youngsters Jonny Elliott (65) and
Ollie Macrae (27) set about turning the innings around with some stylish
stroke play. The pair put on 60 for the third wicket when Stephen Nand-Lal
(3-21) removed Macrae. Nand-Lal followed this up by taking the fourth wicket
shortly afterwards with the score on 106. The father and son partnership of Dean Elliott (37) and Jonny
Elliott helped boost the score with J Murphy contributing a useful 14 towards
the end. From a strong position of 170-5 Whitchurch slipped to 199 all out in
the 45th over. Jeff Baker (2-29) taking 2 of the last 5 wickets
and the others were shared between Corstorphin and Nand-Lal. Dave Higgins opened the innings with a new Stoke Gabriel
opening partner, Clive Burnell. The Stoke response started badly when J
Murphy removed key batsman Dave Higgins with the score on 16. Burnell was
joined by Tim Nand-Lal and the pair put on 61 for the second wicket. Nand-Lal
scored 54, including 2 6s, before he lost his wicket to the Whitchurch “king
of spin” Neil Tamblin with the score on 87. Dean Elliott, who was playing his first game of the season
(unlucky for Stoke Gabriel), bowled a very good line and length to back up
Tamblin. Tamblin dismissed opener Burnell for 34 after he had hit 6 off side boundaries !! Tamblin then went on to fox the Stoke
batsmen on his way to outstanding figures of 11 overs, 4 maidens, 6 wickets
for 42 runs. Chris Life briefly raised Stoke’s hopes with 16 runs off just 3
scoring shots before he was also out to Tamblin. However Stoke were bowled
out for 143 in the 40th over with Elliott taking the last wicket
to finish with figures of 3 for 20. Whitchurch winning the game by 56 runs. Scorecard
