Report

In a very close match Stoke Gabriel 2nd XI came out on top with a slim 3 wicket victory over Ipplepen. Ipplepen batted first and the first wicket fell to the very first ball of the match with Mark Jackson taking the wicket of Alan Boon. 9 overs later Stephen Nand-Lal removed the second Ipplepen opener, D Alsop, to leave them at 21 for 2.

Mike Perkin was introduced into the attack and he took 2 wickets to leave Ipplepen tottering at 46 for 5. S Harris, who had come in at number 3, watched as his partners came and went at the other end. He dug in and scored an excellent 50 which only saw him lose his wicket with 3 overs to go. He received support from Rob Hay and P Harvey including an 8th wicket partnership between Hay and Harris. Jeff Baker bowled a very tight line and length which saw him take 2 wickets for just 21 runs from 10 overs. Mark Jackson (3-48) and Stephen Nand-Lal (2-37) returned to the attack and helped restrict Ipplepen to just 127 for 9 off their 46 overs.

Stoke’s innings did not start well when Rob Hay had Malcolm Coleman caught with the score on 5. Alan Boon bowled 3 maidens before a groin injury forced him out of the attack. Tim Nand-Lal joined Jeff Baker to add 47 for the 2nd wicket. Nand-Lal hit 6 4’s in a quick fire innings before he fell to a good catch from Keith Wakeham, off the bowling of S Harris. S Harris picked up 3 more wickets as he followed up his good batting performance with figures of 4 for 36 off 12 overs.

Paul Collings hit 3 4s before he was out to the bowling of Keith Wakeham with the score on 70 for 4. Wakeham bowled miserly with his 9 overs including 7 maidens and went for just 9 runs. Dave Higgins held the Stoke innings together with a well crafted 30 that included a powerful 6. Stoke edged gradually to victory until 3 quick wickets left Stoke on 108 for 6. Mark Jackson made an important 13 at the tail end of the innings and it was left for Doug Ansley and Chris Life to score the winning runs. Stoke eventually passing the Ipplepen score with 7 wickets down.
