Report

On a surprisingly good surface, despite the bad weather, Whitchurch batted first and went on the onslaught. After just 4 overs Whitchurch had scored 32 for the loss of skipper Steve Hodge to opening bowler Stephen Nand-Lal. Nand-Lal removed J Meadows for 20 and Matt Corstorphin had Ollie Macrae trapped LBW to see them dip to 46 for 3. Key man J Newton was then dropped at mid off.

J Newton (68) and J Heatley (32) added 86 for the 4th wicket as Whitchurch reached 132 for 4 in just 28 overs. Matt Corstorphin (3-47) and Stephen Nand-Lal (3-43) came back into the attack and soon removed Aaron Churchill for 26 and Heatley for 32. Tom Armstrong bowled well to take 2 for 51, both wickets coming in the last over to ensure Stoke got maximum bowling points. Whitchurch finished on a very good 219 all out from their 46 overs.

Jeff Baker (25) and Dave Higgins put on 44 for the first Stoke wicket in 11 overs. Dave Higgins became the first of 7 wickets for Ollie Macrae (7-17). Tim Nand-Lal (58) put on 23 with Paul Collings and then 68 with Adam Newman (27). At half way Stoke were on 79 for 3 still needing 141 to win. The score had increased to 144 – 3 from 35 overs when Newman and Nand-Lal fell in the same over to Macrae. The 7 an over required rate proved just too much as Tom Armstrong and Matt Corstorphin tried to get Stoke to victory.

A rush of wickets towards the end of the innings saw Stoke enter the last over on 190-8. Macrae bowled Corstorphin and last man Stephen Nand-Lal had to see off 3 deliveries from Macrae to ensure Stoke got away with a losing draw.
