Report
The Under 17’s opened up their winning account after taking a 18 run victory away at Harberton. With Andy Coles and Alex Harvey walking somewhere on the moors with Ten Tors (Probably lost knowing them) Ben Stone and Fergus Barratt earning call ups after runs for the Under 15’s early on in the week. Winning the toss , captain Adam Deakin chose to bat. Alex Bertram – relieved of wicket keeping duties - opened up with Ben Stone. And it was Stone who took the attack early on. Seizing on the short Harberton boundary he hit a brief , but aggressive 26 – hitting 4 four’s and 1 six , before being bowled at the end of the fourth over for 26. Fergus Barratt put on 20 with Bertram before being bowled , and Giselle Ansley followed soon after. Adam Deakin joined Bertram , and they put on 51 in 8 overs , Deakin launching 4 four’s and 1 Six , continuing good early season form , in an innings of 29. Bertram’s patient innings continued , and Elliot Anderton and Chris Murphy saw the 20 overs out , Stoke ending on 125/5 at the close , with Bertram on 32 not out. After the interval , Steve Nand-Lal and Giselle Ansley shared the opening duties. It was Nand-Lal who scored the first breakthrough , Clark being smartly caught at point by Bob Bamber. Bamber also got involved in breaking the second wicket partnership , bowling Oakley for 10. However , things started to turn for the worse for the away side , after Adam Deakin shelled opener Elliot Buckner in the same over , he and number 4 Lagdon began to build a partnership. Buckner took advantage of some off colour bowling from Bamber , taking 12 off his second – and last – over. Rhys Lowther couldn’t prise the partnership open despite Wicket keeper Fergus Barratt failing to cling on to an edge from Buckner , despite 3 attempts , the ball eluded the keepers gloves. With Lowther and Graham Litt unable to find a wicket , it was beginning to seem as if Harberton could make chase at the total. However , at a key moment in the game , Giselle Ansley got a direct hit from mid wicket , removing Buckner for an excellent 33. After this turning point , Stoke never looked back , Elliot Anderton clutching onto two smart catches , Chris Murphy taking two wickets and Steve Nand-Lal claimed two wickets from the last 3 balls of the game , leaving Stoke 20 runs ahead at the end of the game. Next Match – Tuesday 13th May – Paignton – Home.
