Brixham beat Stoke Gabriel by 28 Runs
Report Stoke Gabriel Under 17’s continued to collect good , valuable points despite being on the loosing side for a fourth consecutive match after being beaten at home to Brixham. Brixham made 143/5 batting first , including 44’s from both Craig Eaves and Chris Sleep , and in reply Stoke ended on 115/6 with runs from Matt Nand-Lal (31*) and Giselle Ansley (25) in a partnership worth 54 , the innings including a hat-trick from Brixham slow bowler Sam Hyde. Despite having three wicket keepers under contract , Stoke were unable to field any of them , with opening bat Alex Bertram working (At McDonalds!) , Under 15’s captain Fergus Barratt awol , and Ben Stone still recovering from Bird-Flu (Its nesting in that man child goatee of his) Stoke turned to Alex Harvey to keep wicket for the first time ever. Andy Coles was again an absentee. With Bertram and Stone both out , Matt Nand-Lal and Andy Ball – who would go on to form a new opening partnership with Elliot Anderton – joined up with the squad after promising showings for the Under 15’s. Brixham won the toss , and elected to bat on another John Webber pearler. Brixham’s batting started patiently , with Steve Nand-Lal and Giselle Ansley as ever sharing the opening duties , keeping runs to a minimum. Ansley claimed the first wicket of the innings , cleaning up Simonetti for a duck. Runs trundled along slowly , and after both finished off their four overs with the score on 30/1. Graham Litt and Rhys Lowther continued to be frustrated by Eaves and Clarke , before partnership-breaker Bob Bamber enticed Clarke down the track , stumped by rookie Harvey for 15. This bought Chris Sleep to the crease , fresh from a recording breaking 138 against Babbacombe in the Brockman cup semi final just 24 hours before. And it didn’t take long for the runs to continue flowing , Bamber serving up a pie , completed with Chips and sauce , and rightly tucked away down the leg side. Lowther removed Eaves for 44 , leaving Brixham at 88/3 with 4 overs to go , eyeing up a formidable total. Chris Murphy took the wicket of Dallow for 1 , with a ball that spun down the hill to clip the top of off stump. And with the strike being returned , Sleepy gave a preview of what was to come , hitting Murphy for 13 in the four remaining balls of the over , and taking the strike for the penultimate over , with the scores on 104. The first ball of Bamber’s final over went for a straight 6 into the next field , followed by three more 4’s and another 6 , with the over going for 26 , leaving Bamber’s previously respectable figures of 2 overs 1/8 , in tatters , at 3 over 1/34. Sleep finally departed after being caught on the fence for 44 , and Brixham on 143/5. Stoke’s reply opened up with Under 15’s opener Andy Ball , and middle order batsmen Elliot Anderton. Andy hit the straps early only , hitting Dallow for 3 boundaries. Anderton, attempting to escape his defensive image , chipping the ball to Hyde at mid off. The younger of the Nand-Lal brothers joined Andy at the crease , and runs continued to come , albeit behind the rate. Clarke removed Ball for 14 , and Ansley joined Nand-Lal at the crease. The run rate stedily increased , but with the overs closing in , Bamber’s final over was really beginning to take its toll. Ansley eventually perished at cow corner for 25 , including five 4’s to Sam Hyde. The skipper came and went in the blink of an eye, attempting a Jannie Pieterse-esque hoike, completely missing the ball , and ending up walking swiftly back to the hut for a first ball duck. Graham Litt strolled to the middle on the hat-trick ball , and after playing back , he dragged on , leaving Sam Hyde with an unlikely hat-trick. Chris Murphy came and went swiftly , being bowled by Eaves, and the Stoke innings ended with Rhys Lowther clearing the rope , 115/6 , 8 more points to the overall total with Matt Nand-Lal ending with 31 not out.
