Stoke Gabriel U15s got their league campaign off to a winning start with a 5 wicket win over Bovey Tracey.
The match started well for Stoke with Matt Deakin removing both Bovey Tracey openers. Lloyd Durbin followed up by bowling Thomas and reducing Bovey to 36 for 3 at the half way stage. A Parkyn (36) and A Wakefield pushed the Bovey total towards 100 with some big hitting. Tom Marke removed Wakefield with an excellent leg break which turned a “mile”.
Esme Ansley bowled tidily only giving away 18 runs from her 4 overs. Matt Deakin was also economical going for just 12 runs from his 4 overs. Bovey’s innings finished on 113 for 6 from their 20 overs.
In response Stoke Gabriel went on the offensive Ben Stone scoring 26 (including 5 “4”s) from an opening partnership of 30. However some poor running saw the demise of both Ben and Andy Ball. Captain Fergus Barratt came into bat at number 3 and he showed his cool head by scoring an elegant 42 to guide Stoke to a 5 wicket victory. Fergus received good support from Matt Nand-Lal, Matt Deakin and Declan Hincliffe who got Stoke to within 1 run of victory. It was left to Esme to join Fergus who scored the winning run and who led Stoke to victory.
