Report

Despite three wickets from Bob Bamber and a well fought 38 not out from all rounder Giselle Ansley Stoke Gabriel Under 17’s were unable to successfully complete the chase against Bovey Tracey. 54 retired from Lewis Hammett , well supported with both bat and ball from Sam Thomas , ensured that Bovey Tracey would be walking away victorious in the opening game of the season.

Alex Bertram won the toss and decided to field , with captain Adam Deakin and driver Alex Harvey nowhere to be seen for the first over of the match , and Bovey began their innings on a very good surface and outfield – despite rain earlier in the week. Opening bowlers Steve Nand-Lal and Giselle Ansley controlled the new ball - with runs hard to come by early on. Nand-Lal taking the first wicket in his third over , bowling Wakefield for 5.  First change bowler Rhys Lowther picked up a wicket himself within his first over – removing Thomas for 24. Hammett came to crease , and his assault began. Leading the line , he built partnerships with Wright – well run out by Chris Murphy , and Brooks – Bamber’s first conquest. Bamber took two more wickets , before Hammett retired on 54 (4 Sixes , 2 Fours). Ansley picked up her only wicket of the innings at the end , leaving Bovey Tracey, well placed on 120/7.

Stoke opened with keeper Alex Bertram and Andy Coles. After Bamber’s late showing Bovey took pace off the ball early on , and with a fragile batting line up , the runs were understandably slow to come by early on.  Andy Coles – looking in slightly better shape that against Stokeinteignhead 3 weeks ago , made 5 before being bowled by Thomas. Bertram followed 4 overs later after being caught slightly short of the crease returning for a second. Captain Adam ‘Nine Lives’ Deakin was joined by Ansley , together put on 36 for the third wicket , before Deakin ran out of lives with Thomas got his second wicket. Ansley and Alex Harvey ran the overs out , ending 28 behind Bovey Tracey’s total , 92/3.
